Pantyhose (called tights in the United Kingdom and a few other countries) are sheer, close-fitting legwear, covering the wearer’s body from the waist to feet. Mostly pantyhose is considered to be a woman’s and girl’s garment. Pantyhose provided a convenient alternative to stockings. The actress-dancer Ann Miller devised pantyhose in the early 1940s as a solution to the problem of continual torn stockings during the filming of dance production numbers.
In 1959, Allen Gant Sr. of Glen Raven Mills introduced pantyhose. Stocking manufacturer began to use circular knitting machines to reduce manual labor and create seam-free stockings. In 1965, Glen Raven Mills introduced a seam-free version of pantyhose, which coincided with the introduction of miniskirt.
